Bread and cured meats, to get back to class with enthusiasm!

Back to class! While the public debate is focused on anti-Covid measures to allow attendance safely, everything else that contributes to ensuring the serenity and enthusiasm of children in this delicate moment risks overshadowing. Nutrition, before and during lessons, is essential to face the return to class in the best possible way and with energy. Better not to give in to the temptation to quickly solve the problem of morning meals with a packaged snack and instead prefer more complete and wholesome foods, with an eye to practicality.

BREAKFAST

The first rule is never skip breakfast! Numerous scientific studies have in fact demonstrated the relationship between an adequate breakfast and a greater capacity for memory, listening and understanding. To start the day properly, your first meal should be 70% carbohydrates, 20% protein and 10% fat. A breakfast suitable for primary school children can consist of a 150cc cup of semi-skimmed milk (or a low-fat fruit yogurt without sugar), a slice of toast (preferably wholemeal) with jam or honey, two biscuits with cereals and a seasonal fruit.

BREAK

The mid-morning snack is equally important. It must be nutritious but not heavy, containing carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This mix satisfies for a long time, avoiding hunger pangs as lunchtime approaches and allows children to discover new flavors every day, also educating their taste. A small sandwich (about 40-50 g of bread, preferably wholemeal) with different cured meats every day (raw ham, speck, cooked ham, bresaola, salami, etc.) is an excellent solution. The cured meats bring some relevant nutritional principles, and in particular high quality and biological value proteins (because they include all the essential amino acids) which guarantee an adequate protein turnover for the synthesis of muscles. It is intuitive how much this is necessary to find the right sprint and momentum for a return to school with energy and enthusiasm also thanks to the presence of vitamin B12, zinc, selenium and iron.
