EU AGRICULTURE: POSITIVE PROJECTIONS, PORK EXPORTS UP 26% IN Q1

The summer 2021 edition of the European Commission’s short-term outlook report was published on 6 July, a detailed document presenting an overview of the latest trends and further prospects for each agri-food sector.

With the significant progress achieved by the EU-wide COVID-19 vaccination campaign, food services are reopening and travel restrictions are gradually being lifted. This should have a positive impact on tourism this summer and on EU food consumption in general. However, uncertainties remain due to the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus and the ability to control it.

Demand from the US and China is expected to drive EU exports, especially dairy products, pork, wine and olive oil. After the significant drop in exports with the UK in early 2021, trade is now picking up again.

Regarding pork specifically, EU production is expected to continue to grow in 2021, increasing by 1.7% or 394,000 tonnes year-on-year in 2020. Although exports to the UK have dropped, overall EU pork exports are expected to grow by 5% in 2021 (+26% of EU pork exports in Q1 2021). High prices are expected to offset rising feed prices.
